About GIMP

GIMP is an image editor led by The GIMP Team with input from its community. It lets you correct a photograph, cut out an object or assemble an illustration from several elements. You work in a document made of layers, each of which can receive its own adjustments and mask. The program belongs to category and offers an official installer for Windows. Its open code and free access suit occasional use just as much as regular editing.

The value of GIMP shows when a correction must stay localised. You can lighten a face without touching the rest of the landscape, replace a background or prepare several variants of the same composition. Its XCF format preserves the structure of the work for later resumption. The files intended for a site, a correspondent or a print are then exported in a suitable format. This separation between working document and delivered image calls for a few habits, but it avoids losing the editable elements too soon. GIMP is aimed more at building and correcting images than at sorting a photographic collection.

Build a document you can pick up again

Start by keeping the original image on one layer and set your edits on separate elements. Name the layers after their role, for example background, subject or text. A mask lets you hide part of an element without deleting the pixels concerned. This method eases changes of framing and later revisions to a cutout. Save the document regularly as XCF, especially before merging elements. An image exported as JPEG will not retain this arrangement. For a montage planned in several sizes, also keep a sufficiently large working version and tune each export to its final use.

Choose the selection suited to each edge

The selection tools answer different cases. A uniform patch of colour selects quickly, whereas a complex silhouette often calls for a mix of paths, masks and brush retouching. Examine the result on a light background then on a dark one to spot haloes. Do not judge solely at very high zoom: an edge acceptable at output size can look uneven once greatly enlarged. For hair or transparent objects, proceed in stages and keep the mask so you can refine the tricky passages without redoing the whole selection.

Correct colours with a clear intent

Levels and curves serve to set the distribution of tones, while colour adjustments correct a cast. Before piling on effects, pin down the problem: insufficient contrast, blocked shadows or inconsistent colour balance. Work on a copy or in a layer arrangement that lets you compare your correction with the original. A photograph meant for a screen and a document prepared for a print chain do not necessarily obey the same constraints. Check the profile requested by the recipient and watch the heavily saturated areas, where a colour transformation can become particularly visible.

Prepare an image according to its destination

For a photograph released online, set the useful dimensions before adjusting the JPEG compression. For an element with transparency, keep a format that preserves the alpha channel, such as PNG. Open the exported file to check its real rendering, because the XCF document does not directly show any losses due to compression. Small texts and contrasting outlines quickly give away flaws. If you must produce several variants, record their dimensions and names in a simple convention. You will thus tell apart the source document, the image meant for the site and the one prepared for another release.

Tune your workspace to the images handled

The layers, brushes and history panels can take up a large share of the screen. Leave visible those you need for the current task, then adjust the layout to your next job. Large images, many layers and long undo sequences push up the need for memory and temporary storage. A file that opens correctly therefore does not guarantee an immediate reaction to each filter. Before installing an extension, make sure it declares compatibility with your branch of GIMP. An extension meant for an older generation may require adaptation and should not be presumed interchangeable.

Set it against the catalogue's other editors

Krita deserves your attention if brush drawing, illustrations and drawn animations make up the bulk of your work. Paint.NET lends itself to more direct image edits in a Windows-centred interface. Adobe Photoshop offers another commercial environment, with its own tools and licensing requirements. To decide, try a concrete task: cut out the same object, rework a text and export a transparent image. Also compare how the document stays editable. The fact that a function appears in several programs guarantees neither the same settings nor the perfect preservation of layers during a file exchange.

  • Layer masks for localised corrections
  • Selection tools fitted to the subjects' edges
  • Curves and levels to set the tones
  • XCF format that preserves the document structure
  • JPEG and PNG export depending on the destination

System requirements

Installer: Windows 10 1903 or later, x86-64 or ARM64; Minimum memory and disk space not specified.

How to install

  1. Download the Windows installer from the official GIMP page.
  2. Launch the EXE file and follow the language and installation choices.
  3. Complete the installation then open GIMP from the Start menu.
  4. Create a test document and save a first XCF copy.

Questions and answers

Is GIMP entirely free?

Yes. GIMP is free software you can download and use without buying a licence. The project accepts contributions, but no payment conditions access to the editing tools of the official version distributed on its site.

Why does GIMP save in XCF format?

The XCF keeps the layers and the other elements needed to resume the work. To pass an image on in a common format, use the export command. Keep the XCF alongside if you have to modify the montage after delivery.

Can a Photoshop file be opened?

GIMP can import PSD files, but not all Photoshop-specific functions are carried over identically. Check the texts, effects and complex elements after opening. For an important exchange, also ask for a flattened reference image.

Does GIMP stand in for a photo manager?

Its first role remains editing individual images and composition. On its own it does not form a complete photographic library. Sort your originals and your exports into separate folders before beginning a series of repetitive edits.

Which version of Windows is required?

The current installer states Windows 10 version 1903 or later and supports the x86-64 and ARM64 architectures. The Microsoft Store distribution applies different conditions. So check the channel chosen before downloading a package meant for your computer.
