Picking software to download for a low-spec Windows PC

A computer with little memory or an old processor can still serve to go through documents, track down files and edit text. The choice of program, however, should start from your task and your version of Windows. This selection gathers four tools with clearly defined roles, with no speed ranking and no promise to transform the hardware. You get a file search engine, a document viewer, an archiving utility and a text editor. They do not stand in for all the software on a workstation. Compare first the formats you handle, then the architectures offered and the behavior with your own files. A program that starts cleanly can still slow down on a huge document or a demanding compression operation.

How to choose

  • Spot your primary task before comparing programs: searching for a file name, reading a PDF, extracting an archive, or editing text.
  • Check the version of Windows and the architecture of the package offered; the existence of a portable version does not change the program's requirements.
  • Test a file representative of your usual work, since the size and complexity of the content weigh on the result more than a blank screen.
  • Track the available memory and disk activity during the test, leaving other applications in a comparable state so you can interpret the gaps.
  • Give priority to the functions actually used and look at the added extensions; a long list of possibilities does not prove a better fit for your computer.

4 programs

Everything

Everything locates files and folders by name using a continuously updated index on Windows.

Utilities · Windows · 1952 KB (x64 multilingual installer)
1.4.1.1032

To get back to scattered files, Everything spares you opening each folder by hand. Its index concerns names above all, which sets it apart from searching the entire text of documents. The number of elements indexed bears on the resources used. Check the service and the settings required for NTFS indexing before you compare your first results.

SumatraPDF

SumatraPDF displays your PDF files, e-books and comic books inside a single viewer built for Windows.

Work & office · Windows · 10.56 MB (Windows x64 installer)
3.6.1

SumatraPDF suits a workstation mainly used to view and print PDFs or read other supported documents. Its Windows packages let you pick the architecture that matches the computer. It does not provide the full functions of a PDF editor. Put your scans and large documents to the test, since they may behave differently from a small text file.

7-Zip

7-Zip builds 7z and ZIP archives, unpacks RAR files and locks their contents behind a password.

Utilities · Windows · 1.6 MB (Windows x64 EXE)
26.04

7-Zip answers the need to extract and prepare archives without requiring a document management suite. You can tune the compression to the available hardware and read the memory estimate before creating a file. Plan for the space of the extracted data too. RAR support is for extraction; this format is not offered for creating an archive.

With Notepad++, you edit lists, scripts or configurations in a dedicated text editor. Choose the package matching your architecture and look at which extensions are truly needed. A very large file remains a load of its own. This tool does not take over the presentation and layout functions of an office suite.

Start from the concrete problem you run into

A sluggish browser launch and a never-ending document search do not call for the same answer. Here, Everything serves to track down files by name, while SumatraPDF is meant for reading documents. Notepad++ handles work on plain text, and 7-Zip the creating or extracting of archives. This split spares you installing a general-purpose suite for a single operation. Note what you do most often and what really sticks: opening, searching, modifying or exporting. To go further on the first case, the section “File search” lays out how indexing works and where a search by name reaches its limits.

Check Windows before you count megabytes

Recent versions do not cover all older systems by default. SumatraPDF 3.6.1 offers x86 and x64 packages for Windows 7 through 11, while its ARM64 package calls for Windows 10 or 11. The Everything FAQ cites Windows XP through Windows 11, but the indexing options must match the file system in use. Choose the right package for 7-Zip and Notepad++ in the same way. When the publisher states no minimum memory for the version chosen, do not fill that gap with an estimate presented as a fact. The program's compatibility with an older Windows says nothing about Microsoft's support for that system.

Use examples close to your own work

A PDF made of text and a batch of scanned pages do not necessarily tax the viewer in the same way. Likewise, opening a few lines in Notepad++ tells you nothing about a file of several hundred megabytes. Put together a small set of usual documents and repeat the operations that matter to you. In Everything, the memory in use depends in particular on the number of files indexed; searching their content is not the same as using the name index. Note the context of the test before setting two results side by side. You can then choose according to your use without turning a one-off impression into a general performance ranking.

Adjust the operation before switching software

In 7-Zip, some compression settings call for more memory; the program shows an estimate in the creation window. A more modest setting may suffice when your aim is simply to send several documents together. For reading PDFs, ask whether you need to view and print, or to modify the content: the second need calls for other tools. In a text editor, extensions bring their own functions and constraints. Start from a setup you understand, then add only what is missing. This approach helps pin down the cause of a problem and avoids changing several things before you know which one helped.

Build a limited but coherent workstation

You can combine these tools without seeing them as a mandatory bundle. A computer devoted to reading mainly benefits from a suitable viewer, whereas a file-preparation station draws more on archiving and searching. Leave enough room for the extracted documents: the small size of an installer does not reflect the final size of the job. If you are starting from a fresh system, the “After installing Windows” selection helps order the installations according to your tasks. To widen the available functions afterward, see “Free software per use” and compare the free editions, their limits and the needs of the projects you are actually considering.

Frequently asked questions

Which software uses the least memory?

No single answer fits these four tools, because they perform different tasks. Memory also depends on the documents open, the indexing and the settings. Set equivalent operations on your computer side by side rather than comparing only download size or window appearance.

Does a portable version run on every old PC?

No. Portable mainly describes how the program is launched or kept, not its hardware compatibility. Always check the Windows version and architecture announced for the package. A portable x64 executable does not become compatible with a 32-bit system by its distribution method alone.

Do you have to install all four programs on this list?

Install those that answer a task you have now. You can read your documents without a further file index, or extract an archive on occasion without editing plain text. Add a program as soon as you can name the operation it will simplify in your daily use.

Can a word processor be replaced with Notepad++?

Notepad++ suits plain text, code and configuration files. It does not take over the layout of a word processor with styles, tables and structured printing. Determine the format of the document you need to produce before choosing a tool solely for its apparent simplicity.
