About SumatraPDF
SumatraPDF is an open-source document viewer created by Krzysztof Kowalczyk together with the project's contributors. Alongside PDF, it handles a range of formats for e-books, documents and comics. Belonging to the category, this program targets Windows and can be downloaded either as an installer or as a portable archive. It answers the needs of anyone who simply wants to view locally stored files, leaf through pages and track down a passage, without first having to set up elaborate library management.
The interface puts the document itself and the reading controls front and centre. Thanks to tabs, several files stay open at once, and the viewing modes align with the page or with the width that is available. Text search is at hand whenever the content lends itself to it, as are the bookmarks built into certain files. What you can do depends on the format and version: a page scanned as an image does not react like a PDF with selectable text. It would therefore be unwise to settle on SumatraPDF going by the file extension alone. For an administrative formality or a document with specific functions, try out the operations you need on a real case before adopting it as your everyday viewer.
Match the view to the document in hand
A report, a music score and a comic strip do not necessarily call for the same way of reading. Set the zoom to width or to page according to the room you have and the size of the characters. Continuous scrolling makes some long documents more pleasant, whereas a page-by-page view helps you stick to a strict layout. When the file carries a table of contents or bookmarks, rely on them to go straight to the parts you care about. Also remember to check the orientation and margins before any printing. A display that feels comfortable on screen does not mean the document will fit the paper size loaded in your printer on its own.
Search inside a PDF while knowing its limits
Text search only works provided the file holds characters that are genuinely usable. In a PDF produced by a scanner, the pages sometimes amount to plain images, lacking any recognised text layer. An empty result therefore does not prove the word is missing from the screen. Try selecting a sentence to work out how the document is put together. Some PDFs also rely on fonts or encodings that hamper selection. In those situations, bookmarks, page numbering and a visual sweep remain valuable for tracking down a passage. Character recognition is a form of processing applied to the document, quite separate from simply opening it in a viewer.
Go through books and comic collections
Besides PDF, SumatraPDF handles formats such as EPUB, MOBI, CBZ and CBR. How they render depends on the way they are built: a book with reflowable text and a collection of drawn pages do not display in the same manner. Look over the reading options tied to the open file and settle on a comfortable text size or zoom. The fact that a format is supported does not mean a piece of content locked by a particular rights system will open all the same. Store your original files legibly, using labels that bring out the volumes, the editions and, where relevant, the versions meant for a specific device.
Take the installer or stay with the portable archive
The installer makes sense when you want to fold SumatraPDF into your usual environment and set the file associations. The portable archive, on the other hand, lets you launch the program from a folder once it is unpacked, without going through a conventional installation. Pick the package that fits your architecture: the official page separates the 64-bit, 32-bit and ARM64 editions in particular. The Windows prerequisites differ across these variants. With a view to running it from removable media, make sure your documents stay reachable and that the paths match your filing. A viewer being portable in no way removes the need to back up the files you view or annotate.
Set up a crisp and complete printout
Before you start printing, run through the page count, the orientation and the scale. A fit option keeps content from being clipped, yet it occasionally alters the size of elements. For a plan or a document whose measurements must hold, confirm the scaling settings by way of a test print. Double-sided output and mixed sizes likewise call for a look at the printer driver. If the document is long, limit yourself first to a few representative pages. A blank page or a missing element may stem from the file, the rendering or the driver; testing another document helps pin down the cause before you relaunch the whole print.
Set reading, library management and document creation side by side
calibre brings library management and tools dedicated to digital books, welcome whenever the aim is to arrange a collection rather than open a single file. LibreOffice and Microsoft Word, for their part, serve to write and revise office documents before exporting them. SumatraPDF, meanwhile, chiefly answers the need to consult files that are already finished. If the text of a report has to be reworked on a regular basis, keep the source document in its original software. To settle on a viewer, put the files you actually handle to the test: an ordinary PDF, a scanned document and a digital book. That way you will learn which functions your version includes and which ones demand another tool.
